Two women and two young boys, enjoying short-term care for children, stand smiling together outside on grass near a lake, with trees in the background.

Home alone?

Kerry Greenland is adventurous. Her husband, Kerrol, is understanding. Both have big hearts. Both follow Jesus Christ.

So when Better Together shared our mission at their church, Celebration SDA, Kerrol and Kerry did what they believed Jesus would do: they volunteered to care for the “least of these.”

They opened their home to Mateo and Julian, who needed temporary care while their mother, Damaris, was in the hospital.greenlands host mateo and julian 2

“We’re home alone,” said Kerry of her and Kerrol, whose children are grown.

Kerrol, who is a high school math teacher currently on summer break, kept the boys meaningfully busy and on the go. They read books, and Kerrol made learning math fun. He shared his love of playing bass guitar and piano. They took walks, splashed in the pool, and played video games too.

Kerry, a mental health professional who works from home, made sure Mateo and Julian stayed connected to their mom via FaceTime and calls. She also made the boys food from her birthplace, Jamaica, and shared recipes with their mother.

Kerry and Kerrol also prayed and worshiped with Mateo and Julian, who brought their Bibles with them.

After a week, Mateo and Julian reunited with their mother, who is recovering and expressed gratitude during a follow-up visit with Family Support Manager Keishla Gonzalez-Valez.

“They were humble, open-hearted, and treated my kids like their own,” Damaris said of Kerry and Kerrol.

She also thanked the Varkey host family that cared for the boys for a day.

Kerry was thankful too.

“I’m glad we were able to touch them in some way.”
