Governor and First Lady present $50,000 grant from Florida Disaster Fund

I’m excited to share that Better Together hurricane relief efforts have been recognized by the governor’s office with a generous $50,000 contribution from the privately funded Florida Disaster Fund.

This morning, in a Tampa Bay community where we’ve been on the ground helping families, Gov. Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis presented checks to 11 organizations, including Better Together. During the event, DCF Secretary Shevaun Harris highlighted the incredible work our team, volunteers, and churches are doing across the state to provide support and fill in the gap for families.

The team and I are incredibly grateful for the governor and first lady’s leadership, trust, and continued support, allowing us to help families emerge from this difficult situation even stronger. Families like Tichina and her young children are finding hope in the midst of crisis.

Hurricane Milton flooded Tichina’s apartment. With no place to go, she and her four boys lived in her 2014 Nissan.

The storm flooded their apartment and Tichina’s workplace. We provided her food, water, essential items, and gas. We found space for the family at a shelter in nearby Auburndale, and we are reaching out to host families to care for the boys while we help Tichina.

We’re also thankful to the Florida Department of Children and Families and Hope Florida for partnering with us in our efforts. Secretary Harris has been in daily contact with me, collaborating to ensure we collectively have the greatest possible impact for families.

Our work after the storms directly ties in with our mission to build strong families and prevent the need for foster care. Every day, we help families weather life’s storms—whether a medical emergency, homelessness, addiction, or isolation. A hurricane is just another crisis, and while we provide urgent supplies like food and water, we’re also connecting with families who need the additional support of Better Together programs. We’re hosting children, mentoring parents, and helping individuals find jobs.

This grant is a testament to your generous support, enabling us to serve more families and communities across the state. We couldn’t do this work without you—our volunteers, donors, churches, and community partners. Thank you!
