We were all made to flourish

When families experience homelessness, job loss, medical emergencies, or other crises, our volunteer-powered safety net helps prevent trauma and the need for foster care.

Our volunteer host families provide short-term care for children, job fairs offer meaningful work opportunities, and mentors guide and encourage.

Uplifting long-term relationships form, economic self-sufficiency becomes attainable, and families remain together.

Throughout the year, we will share stories of families across Florida flourishing as a result of your ongoing support.

Thank you for caring.

Standing for Jojo

December 23, 2025

Standing for Jojo

Bryanna kissed her newborn son and then watched a firefighter carry him away.

Once they were out of Bryanna’s sight, she closed her apartment door and collapsed to the floor. Tears burned her eyes. Grief choked her heart. Uncertainty shook her mind.

“I think I’m making a mistake. I don’t know if I’m making a mistake. I don’t know what to do right now. Why didn’t I talk to anyone about this?” Bryanna frantically thought.

Minutes earlier, Bryanna called the fire department to come get her son, Jojo. She was postpartum, her marriage had ended, she was not working, food and baby formula were difficult to come by, and she was facing homelessness.

She and Jojo were alone.

“I want what’s best for him. I want him to be happy. I want him to be healthy. I want him to have a life that I can’t offer him,” she told the emergency personnel who responded.

The emergency personnel noticed Jojo’s excellent health and the high level of care Bryanna had provided, but they understood her situation. They would take Jojo to HCA Blake Hospital per protocol. Before leaving, they told Bryanna being away from Jojo didn’t have to be permanent. They gave Bryanna a list of organizations that could help her. They hugged her. They left.

Bryanna was now truly alone.

But in those moments on the floor, Bryanna couldn’t ignore her love for Jojo. She didn’t want him to end up in foster care. She would rather they struggle to live together than live apart.

Bryanna stood up.

She called her sister for a ride to pick up Jojo from the hospital. Around the same time, hospital personnel contacted Better Together family support manager Jessica Braemer. Jessica called Bryanna right away and told her, “You are not alone. We are here to help you.”

When Bryanna arrived at the hospital, a nurse instantly knew who she was hoping to see. “You want to go back and see him?” the nurse asked. “Yes. Please,” said Bryanna.

Jojo was asleep in a nurse’s arms. When the nurse saw Bryanna, she placed Jojo in her arms.

“I’m sorry for leaving,” Bryanna whispered.

“We’re going home.”

Running toward work, love

Running toward work, love

Victor spent most of his life running.

When he was a child, he ran to live with his aunt because of his mother’s lifestyle. But by age 9, he missed his mother so much that he ran back to her against his aunt’s wishes.

Despite his mother’s efforts to change her ways to care for Victor, she didn’t. Victor ran to the streets, where regrettable decisions handcuffed his hope.

“I was living the life that the average 9- or 10-year-old shouldn’t be,” said Victor, who at age 12 in 2008, was arrested and sentenced to a year in a juvenile program. He would spend the next 15 years running in and out of jail.

But Victor also improved his life during these challenging times. He earned his GED and grew his relationship with his mother, who had turned her life around. His faith flourished, too.

Then on November 12, 2024, at 3:12 a.m., Victor finally stopped running.

His wife gave birth to their son, Lyric.

Lyric motivated Victor to continue straightening out his life. Wanting to provide for his family, Victor pursued work with all he had. Employers occasionally gave him a chance, but most of the time they didn’t.

However, in April, Victor attended our Nationwide Day of Second Chances job fair at Riverside Church in Fort Myers, which led to him landing a job with All American Barricades.

Victor is grateful for the second chance.

“I’m able to provide for them. I’m able to be a father.”
